Bhuabneswar, July 6 (UNI) Trade Unions and political parties in Orissa today welcomed the decision of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to put on hold the Centre's decisions and proposals for offloading its stake in National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO).

All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) Orissa unit Secretary Souribandhu Kar had welcomed the Prime Minister's decision and said the workers in Orissa would never remain a silent spectator to any move to privatise the profit making NALCO.

He said the general strike called by the seven trade unions and all major political parties in the state on June 30 last protesting against the 10 per cent off loading of the equity in NALCO was unprecedented and fully successful.

Mr Kar said earlier also the NDA government was forced to withdraw its proposal to disinvest NALCO in the wake of strong public resentment. This time also there was widespread resentment when the UPA government decided to off load 10 per cent equity.

INTUC state unit President Ram Chandra Khuntial also welcomed the Prime Minister's decision on NALCO and congratulated Congress President Sonia Gandhi. He said a delegation of Congress leaders from the state had apprised the Prime Minister and Sonia Gandhi the resentment of the people of Orissa against disinvestment in NALCO.
