Parl. panel deplores sacking of Venugopal, ask govt to reinstate

New Delhi, Jul 6 (UNI) Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health today deplored the AIIMS Institute Body's decision to sack AIIMS Director P Venugopal and asked the government to review the decision.

The 35-member Standing Committee, headed by Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, met this afternoon and unanimously decided to ask the government to reinstate the eminent cardiac surgeon on the post, Committee member Maneka Gandhi said.

The Committee also decided to call Health Secretary P K Hota before it to seek an explanation about the controversial sacking of Dr Venugopal.

Members from various political party, including the Congress, Left Parties, Telugu Desam Party, Samajwadi Party, and the BJP, participated in the meeting. The only absentee was Karan Singh Tomar, who is a member of the AIIMS Institute Body which took the decision to dismiss the director.

The controversial sacking, which led to a flash strike at AIIMS, has already been criticised by various political party. Dr Venugopal has also moved the Delhi High Court against the Institute Body's decision to sack him.
