Meghalaya Independent MLA passes away

Shillong, Jul 6 (UNI) Sitting Independent MLA and Chairman of Meghalaya Fisheries Farmers Development Corporation Predickson G Momin died of cancer today at Nazareth Hospital here.

He was 31 and is survived by his wife and son.

Mr Momin was elected to the seventh Meghalaya Legislative Assembly after defeating his Congress rival and former Transport Minister Sujit K Sangma during the Assembly election held on February 26, 2003.

Soon after he got himself associated with the NCP in the state and later joined the Congress as an associate member.

He started his political career as the president of the Garo Students' Union and even founded the Student's Welfare Association in Garo Hills.

He also served as the Headmaster of a primary school from 2001 up to 2003.

Chief Minister J D Rymbai and Assembly Speaker Martin M Danggo termed his sudden death as a 'great loss to the people of the state in general and his constituent in particular'.

Several political leaders cutting across party lines rushed to ths MLAs' hostel to pay their last homage to the departed soul.

Meanwhile, Momin's body was taken to his native Rongjeng village for the funeral rites to be held tomorrow.

Home Minister Robert G Lyngdoh and the speaker accompanied the relatives to Rongjeng.
