Allahabad, July 6 (UNI) A division bench of the Allahabad High Court today issued notice to a television news channel and the Centre on a petition by Atique Ahmad, seeking cancellation of the channel's licence for "tarnishing" his image and attempting to mar his political career.

The Samajwadi Party MP stated in the petition that the channel had telecast a programme titled "SAM" on May 19 in which the letter 'S' stood for Bihar politician Mohammed Shahabuddin, the word 'A' for himself and and 'M' for Mukhtar Ansari, MLA from Mau assembly constituency.

The programme projected the petitioner as a 'mafia don' who could commit any crime for pecuniary gain. The news channel also made no attempt to get his version before the telecast, he contended.

The bench comprising Mr Justice B S Chauhan and Mr Justice Dilip Gupta passed the order after hearing the parties.
