New Delhi, July 6 (UNI) Dr P Venugopal, the sacked director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), called ''preposterous'' the talk of amicable settlement offered by Union Government's counsel Gopal Subramaniam before the Delhi High Court today.

Mr Subramaniam submitted before Justice Anil Kumar that if Dr Venugopal relinquished his office on his own, the government could consider withdrawing the dismissal order.

However, senior counsel and BJP leader Arun Jaitley, who is representing Dr Venugopal in the court, said that the suggestion was ''unfair and unworthy of consideration''.

Mr Subramaniam also sought to give an impression that the government wanted to give Dr Venugopal a dignified exit as he revealed that the dismissal was resorted to because an attempt of resolution had failed earlier.

Praying before Justice Anil Kumar to stay the order recommending dismissal of Venugopal, Mr Jaitley said the order was illegal and lacked legal competence.

The government counsel, however, opposed it calling the dismissal order legal and competent.

Justice Anil Kumar adjourned the hearing till tomorrow.
