Chennai, July 6 (UNI) DMK nominee and industrialist K P K Kumaran was today declared elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu.

The election was necessitated following the resignation of sitting member and actor Sarath Kumar after he joined the AIADMK prior to the Tamil Nadu Assembly polls in May last.

Mr Kumaran's election, which was officially declared by State Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta, was a foregone conclusion as no other party fielded candidate for the poll to the Upper House.

The nomination of a non-serious independent candidate, Padmarajan, was rejected on scrutiny on July four, paving way for the unopposed election of the DMK candidate.

Mr Kumaran is the son of former DMK Minister K P Kandasamy and grandson of late S P Adithan, who floated the 'Dina Thanthi' group of newspapers.

He recently sold 'Dinakaran,' a newspaper floated by his father, to Mr Kalanidhi Maran, who owned the Sun TV Group.
