Ms Khan said former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi always supported empowerment of women and advocated for more participation and reservation of women in Panchayati raj institutions. She said Mr Gandhi had always advocated for reserving 33 per cent seats in the Panchyati Raj institutions for women, prompting former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh to reserve seats for woman folk.

She said the Congress was always in favour of passage of womens bill for reservation of 33 per cent in Parliament , but the party's effort to bring a consensus on the issue had not been successful so far.

Newly appointed president of Bihar unit of Womens Congress, Sunita Devi said that state and districts units of the unit would be reconstituted soon.
