Agitating farmer leaders arrested
Mandya, Karnataka, July 6 (UNI) Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha President K S Puttanniah and other farmer leaders were today arrested when they attempted to lay seige to the Deputy Commissioner's office here, demanding higher price for sugarcane.
Terming the price fixation as ''unscientific'', sugarcane growers and activists of the Sarvodaya Party and Socialist party raised slogans, demanding Rs 1,250 per tonne for sugarcane as against Rs 1,100 per tonnes fixed by the Government.
Today's agitation followed earlier stirs like road blockade on the Mysore-Bangalore highway and dharna in front of the DC's office.
The agitators have also decided to observe Mandya bandh on July ten if the Government did not accept their demands by then.
