Sensex surges past the 10,900 mark

Mumbai, July 5 (UNI) The global turn of events and the strong performance of index heavy weights like Reliance industries, L&T, and Gujarat Ambuja, rallied the BSE sensitive index beyond the 10,900 mark as the Sensex closed 257 points in the green at 10,919.64.

Earlier, North Koreas' testing of nuclear missiles had a ripple effect on the performance of all the Asian markets and also a cascading effct on the Indian bourses as all apprehended geo-political fallout of the event.

However, recovering the low of 10,611.75 Sensex touched a high of 10,940 points and closed 257 points above the previous close.

All the sectoral indices on the Sensex closed in the green. FMCG was up by 3.18 per cent to 2004.82, Metals was up 3.11 per cent to 8749.79 on the spirited performance of London Metals Exchange, Capital Goods was up by 2.22 per cent to 7109.31 points, whereas, Teck, PSU and Auto were up by 1.68 per cent, 1.03 per cent and 1.14 per cent, respectively.

Major Gainers on the index were - Reliance Energy, Grasim Industries, Tata Steel, Reliance Communications, HDFC, HLL, Dr Reddy's Lab, ICICI, L&T and Gujarat Ambuja Cement all up between 3.43 per cent to 5.39 per cent.
