Operation of Mumbai Port affected due to heavy rains

Mumbai, July 5 (UNI) The operations at the Mumbai Port was highly affected due to the heavy rains that continued to lash the city for the fifth day here today.

However, the operations at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), which mainly handles big containers, remained unaffected.

The Mumbai Port, which handles cargo measuring between 22,000 tons and 30,000 tons on normal days, could handle cargo weighing merely 1,000 tons. A port official reasoned that, ''We handle cargoes like sugar and soyabean that can't be tackled during rainy season.'' However, the functioning of JNPT was normal.

The simple reason behind it being that the JNPT, which is one among the 12 major ports of the country, handles big containers which remains unaffected by rains.

Local MET office's forecast this morning talking of heavy downpour within next 24 hours did have its impact on the functioning of industrial houses in the city.

Still, nearly 75 per cent of the employees in most of the industrial houses attended their offices today. All the private and government schools have been closed in the city keeping in view the weather forecast, whereas all the government offices remained opened as usual.
