SUCI protests against price rise of essential commodities

New Delhi, Jul 3 (UNI) Activists belonging to the Socialist Unity Centre of India today held a demonstration here against the price hike of essential commodities saying the rise was unbearable.

Scores of activists and supporters of the SUCI staged a demonstration at Parliament Street on the steep hike in prices of all essential commodities, particularly cereals, pulses and vegetables.

Members of the state organising committee of SUCI R K Sharma and Harish Tyagi and local committee incharges Girwar Singh and Prakash Devi addressed the demonstrators.

They said prices of essential commodities, particularly food items, have gone beyond the reach of the common man.

''This is not due to shortage of production of food items, but due to the free hand given by the government to private sector who indulge in hoarding these commodities,''they said.

A memorandum was submitted to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging him to strengthen the public demonstration system, ensuring all-out state trading of essential commodities, opening of sufficient number of fair price shops for distribution, re-introduction of food subsidy in order to check price rise and punish people indulging in black marketing and hoarding.
