Pathalgaon (Chhattisgarh), July 3 (UNI) A sarpanch of a gram panchayat here has quit his elected post to take up the job of a 'shikshakarmi'-- a teacher working on honorarium basis.

Kansabel development block chief executive officer Bhanjan Sai told UNI that Mr Manoj Tigga, the elected sarpanch of Kenadada gram panchayat, quit the post after he was selected a grade three shikshakarmi.

''The returning officer has accecpted his resignation'', he added.

Mr Tigga has a reason for quitting the elected post of this grass-roots level democratic institution.

''It is very difficult to remain honest on sarpanch's post.

It's also difficult to make both ends meet,'' he said adding ''by taking up a job, I can honestly fulfill all my responsibilities''.

''I took the decision to join politics in a haste. Now, I have no qualms over quitting the elected post,'' he said.

An elected sarpanch of a gram panchayat gets a honorarium of Rs 300 per month while a grade three shikshakarmi gets an honorarium of Rs 2,700 per month.
