CPI(M) leader killed in Midnapore

West Midnapore, July 3 : The Maoists shot dead a CPI(M) leader here last night.

CPI(M) leader Chaiti Mahato was returning through the forest area to his village Bortilia from Birpur, when he was attacked by the Maoists.

Police sources said the ultras fired two rounds at him and then tied his body to the cycle that he was riding, setting up a booby trap. Villagers located his body but realised that there was a trap and called the police, who arrived with the bomb squad.

The CPI(M) have called a 12-hour bandh in Lalbagh area today to protest the killing.

Meanwhile, police recovered 500 gms of explosives from Silabati area. Police also recovered 100 posters and pamphlets from the Maoists in Hura, Sanabazar and Bandwan areas of the district. The posters had called for a 24-hour bandh at Purilia, Bankura and West Midnaopre districts protesting the agricultural policies of the UPA government at the Centre and the Left Front at the state.
