Kanchi Mutt renovation as per vastu shastra

Kancheepuram, Jul 3: The age-old Sankara Mutt here, mired in a controversy following the arrest of both the Sankaracharyas in a murder case, is being renovated as per 'vastu shastra.' A cock was sacrificed in front of the mutt yesterday to ward off evil before the demolition of the entrance was taken up.

The mutt, which used to be a beehive of activity with hundreds of devotees from all over the country thronging it every day to seek the blessings of the Sankaracharyas, now has only a handful of visitors.

Mutt sources said the entrance was being renovated as per 'vastu' in view of unsavoury incidents in the recent past.

Senior seer Jayendra Saraswati, his junior Vijayendra Saraswati and mutt manager N Sundaresa Iyer were among the 24 arrested in connection with the murder of Varadaraja Perumal temple manager Sanakararaman on September three, 2004.

After a long legal battle, both the seers were released on bail and the trial was now being conducted in Pondicherry Sessions Court.
