Rotary should take lead in Human Rights protection: Gujral

Bangalore, July 2 (UNI) Former Prime Minister I K Gujral today called upon Rotarians to take the lead in launching programmes for protection of Human Rights in the nation.

Speaking at the felicitation ceremony of 'Padmashri' recipient Dr Rajendra Kumar Saboo, the second Indian Rotary International President here, he said Rotary International, which had excelled in carrying out polio eradication programmes in every nook and corner of the nation, should now concentrate on safeguarding human rights, especially towards ensuring protection of women and child rights.

Expressing concern over growing incidences of women and children trafficking, Dr Gujral said a study should be conducted to bring out the extent of affected women and children.

He said Rotary International had gained high popularity in South Asia for launching people-oriented programmes which had helped in solving many problems. In tune with changing times, it should prepare new programmes to serve the oppressed and weaker sections of the society, he added.
