Ricardo's three penalty saves a World Cup record

GELSENKIRCHEN, July 1: Ricardo of Portugal became the first goalkeeper to save three penalties in a World Cup finals shootout today.

Ricardo saved spot kicks by England players Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher as Portugal advanced to the semi-finals with a 3-1 shootout win following a 0-0 draw after extra time.

Several other keepers have saved two penalties in a World Cup shootout.
