Muslim cleric shot dead

Varanasi, July 2 (UNI) Unidentified assailants today shot dead a Muslim cleric in Sigra area here.

Police said Shakil Ahmad (55), a Maulvi in a mosque in Lallapura, was returning after offering morning 'namaz', when two scooter-borne criminals opened fire at him and fled.

The cleric died on the spot,police added.

Since the deceased belonged to the neighbouring Allahabad district, police teams had been sent there for further investigation.
