AP Govt to revive Legislative Council

Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, Jul 2 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Government today speeded up the formalities for the revival of Legislative Council which was abolished by the TDP Government in 1980s.

According to official sources, the Assembly Secretariat had been coordinating with the Central Government to finalise the issues, like composition of the council, which will more or less remain the same, before its abolition.

The State Government had instructed the Assembly Secretariat to speed up the process for the revival of the Council. The Government was not keen on changing the composition of the Council or the nature of the constituencies, as any modification will require constitutional amendement.

A bill was also enacted in Parliament for the revival of State Legislative Council (SLC) recently, as the Congress had promised to set up the Council during the 2004 Assembly Elections in the State.
