Violence over ownership of football ground
Kolkata, July 1 (UNI) At least 15 people were injured, three arrested and prohibitory orders imposed at Shivpur in the neighbouring Howrah district today after local people clashed with the police over the ownership of a football ground.
Howrah district Superintendent of Police Rajesh Singh, describing the incident as 'unfortunate', said violence erupted after some policemen, in order to implement a Supreme Court order regarding the ownership of a football ground in the area, tried to build a boundary wall.
Soon a large number of people gathered at the spot and protested against the attempt at the only football ground in the locality.
They also prevented the police from implementing the Apex Court's order. Soon, the mob turned violent and started pelting stones at the police, forcing them to resort to lathi charge.
In the clash that ensued, 15 people, including one policeman, sustained injuries, Mr Singh said adding that three people had so far been arrested. Some of the injured, including the policeman, had also been hospitalised, he said.
Prohibitory orders under section 144 Cr P C were imposed in the locality to prevent recurrence of such incident. A strong police camp has been posted for the same purpose.
