Students rally to demand more Marathi medium high schools
Surat, July 1 (UNI) Hundreds of Marathi students held a rally from Gandhi Chowk to the district collector's office here demanding new Marathi Medium High Schools.
The rally was organised by Maharashtra Samata Parishad to highlight the plight of thousands of students passing Class VII, from Marathi medium schools who could not be accomodated in high schools since due to lack of such schools.
Recently, the Parishd had submitted a memorandum to Surat Municipal Corporation's commissioner in this regard.
''But we did not see any progress in our request. That is why we decided to approach the district collector who is the representative of the state government,'' the Parishad Nirvruti president Lokhande informed.
He said more than 3,000 students had passed from Marathi medium schools this year, but there were not enough high schools to accommodate them.
''If the state government is not taking any action, the issue will darken the future of hundreds of students,'' said Mr Lokhande.
Later, the agitators submitted a memorandum to additional district collector B M Mewada.
