Railways to have big share of transportation in Uttaranchal

New Delhi, July 1 (UNI) The hill state of Uttaranchal has envisioned a big role for Railways and Ropeways in its development by deciding for a substantial increase in their share in cargo and passenger transportation.

Rail transport will be developed as an important alternative to reduce transportation cost for industrial and tourism sector, according to officials.

The state would develop a satellite railway station at Harrawala and establish rail connectivity at three new locations--Khatima, Almora and Rani Khet.

Besides, the railway line between Laksar-Dehra Dun section will be doubled and a luxury train service will be started between Delhi and Ramnagar.

The state has also drawn up a plan to exploit the full potential of the ropeway in transportation.

It is considering creation of a Ropeway Authority to expedite systematic and fast expansion and development of the network.

The state government would set up passenger ropeways at places of religious and tourist interest.

It would also set up cargo ropeways for transportation of agri produce to the nearest roadhead.
