Pranab demands heritage status for Bidhan Ch Roy's residence

Kolkata, July 1 (UNI) Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee today urged the West Bengal government to declare former Chief Minister Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy's residence as a ''heritage building''.

''We appeal to the Left Front government to renovate Dr Roy's residence and declare it as a heritage building,'' Mr Mukherjee said while inaugurating the 125th birth anniversary celebrations of Late Dr Roy here.

Mr Mukherjee said West Bengal was among the top industrial state when Mr Roy was the Chief Minister.

''Even largescale land reforms were carried on during Mr Roy's regime,'' he added.

State Pradesh Congress president Somen Mitra, party's working president in the state Pradip Bhattacharjee, MLA Manas Bhuiya and leader Sudip Bandopadhyay spoke on the occasion.
