Over 3000 viral fever cases detected in Aurangabad district

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, July 1 (UNI) As many as 3314 people are suffering from viral fever in the district and few of them are suspected chikun guniya cases, according to Deputy Director Health Dr P R Jakkal.

Addressing a press conference here today, Dr Jakkal said as per the information, some patients at three places in the district have shown symptoms of chikun guniya and their blood samples have been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) whose report is awaited.

According to Dr Jakkal, a survey conducted by the health department of the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) revealed that out of 263,605 people examined by the medical team in a house-to-house survey of 52,721 homes, 1389 people were found suffering from viral fever and 23 suffered from joint pains.

Besides, 1470 people were found suffering from viral fever in various out patient department. Around 158 of them were found suffering from joint pains.

In the private hospitals, of the 910 patients examined by 292 city doctors, 63 were found suffering from viral fever.

An outbreak of viral fever has been declared in two places of the district and various preventive measures have been launched. The fresh outbreak of the viral fever assumes significance against the backdrop of a massive outbreak of fever accompanied by chikun guniya in the Marathwada region during February and May 2006.

There were about 19,201 people affected by viral fever in the four districts of Aurangabad (Health) division, which recorded about 161 outbreaks of the viral fever. However, those previous outbreaks were brought under control by the authorities.
