Homage paid to Vasat-Rajab, martyrs of communal riot in 1946
Ahmedabad, July 1 (UNI) A number of non-government organisations here today paid tributes to Vasant Rao Hegishte and Rajab Ali Lakhani, who were killed on this day during the communal riots in 1946.
The social activists, who met at the Vasant-Rajab Chowk in the walled city's Jamalpur locality, under the aegis of Movement for Secular Democracy remembered the day as 60th anniversary of communal amity. The duo became victims of mob fury between warring groups.
In the evening, Gujarat Vidyapith Vice-Chancellor Sudarshan Iyengar released a booklet on 'Vasant-Rajab' written by noted columnist Prakash N Shah.
Similar functions were held in other cities in the State, even as the organisers plan to hold various programmes throughout the year as it is their 60th anniversary.
Other NGOs which took part included Akhil Bhartiya Sevadal, Gujarat Sarvoday Mandal, Ahmedabad Women's Action Group, Prashant, Janpath, Pragatisheel Lekhak Sangh, Cultural Educational Forum and Gandhi Peace Foundation.
