AIIMS awaits SC orders on salary for strike time

New Delhi, July 1: A day after AIIMS Director P Venugopal ordered that salaries be paid to medicos who went on strike, the management today did not release the money, saying the matter was pending in the Supreme Court and its order was awaited.

''The accounts office has told us that the salaries will not be paid. The management is waiting for court orders on the issue...

till then we will not get the money,'' AIIMS Resident Doctors' Association President Binod Patra told UNI.

He said the salaries were to be released with immediate effect as the medicos had finished their tenure.

AIIMS and Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) Resident Doctors' Associations yesterday moved an application in the Supreme Court seeking directions to the Union Health Ministry not to deduct the salary of doctors who participated in the anti-reservation strike from May 14 to June 1.

The issue is coming up again in the Apex Court on July 3.

The court in its order on May 31 while directing the doctors to call off their strike had also issued directions to the Centre not to take any punitive action against the medicos.

The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry in a circular issued to the medicos on June 12 had said ''no work means no pay''.

The doctors in their application had pleaded that since they had worked much beyond the stipulated ten hours period, they must also be paid for working the extra hours.

Yesterday, Dr Venugopal issued the order that salaries of the doctors, who were on anti-reservation strike, be adjusted against extra hours of duty performed by them.

The order said the doctors will not require any extension in their internship period.
