WB govt appoints committee on Urban Land Ceiling Act

Kolkata, June 30 (UNI) The West Bengal government has appointed a high level committee on Urban Land Ceiling Act, before repealing or amending it, to facilitate industrial growth.

Speaking at a programme on ''Impact of Urban Development in and around Kolkata'', organised by Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, state Minister for Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Ashok Bhattacharya yesterday said that this committee will submit its report within three to four months.

On the basis of this report the government will decide whether the Act could be repealed or amended.

'' This committee would be headed by Union Urban Development Ministry Special Secretary S S Chakrabarty, '' Mr Bhattacharya said.

Various Chambers of Commerce had been requesting the state government to abolish the Urban Land Ceiling Act to facilitate easy transfer of land to the industry.

The Urban Land (Ceiling&Regulation) Act, 1976 (ULC Act), promulgated by the Centre, was applicable for Kolkata and its immediate surroundings and some other cities like Siliguri and Asansol.

Meanwhile, the Minister said in a bid to improve urban infrastructure and services, state Urban Development department had drawn up a mega project - 'Vision 2025,' - to develop urban infrastructure of various cities of the state.
