New Delhi, June 30 (UNI) Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation G K Vasan today visited the Delhi Metro Project and examined various initiatives taken by DMRC to implement the system in various parts of India, including the need for a Metro in Chennai.
Mr Vasan evinced keen interest on the Metro System being planned for Chennai City.
Two Corridors-- the 31.5 km Thiruvottiyur to Meenabakkam Airport along Mint Street-Anna Salai and the 13.5 km Madras Beach to Koyambedu via Poonmally High Road-- are under consideration.
The DMRC has already completed the feasibility report for a Metro System in Chennai but work on the Detailed Project Report is pending.
The Minister said he would take up with the Tamil Nadu government the issue of getting the Detailed Project Report completed on the two Corridors early so that the Metro work in Chennai could start after obtaining clearance from the Centre.
The DMRC has already completed the Detailed Project Report for the Metro in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kochi, Ahmedabad and Kolkata.
Metro work in Mumbai has already been taken up for one line while Bangalore and Hyderabad are in an advance stage at present.
Mr Vasan was accompanied by DMRC Managing Director E Sreedharan, and he also travelled on the Metro from Central Secretariat to Karol Bagh, Kashmere Gate and Shastri Park and visited the Operational Control Centre.
