Karunanidhi thanks Sonia, PM for funds for Salem Steel Plant

Chennai, Jun 30 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today thanked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi for allocating Rs 1553 crore for converting Salem Steel Plant into a rolling plant and raising its standard to international level.

''I thank the Congress-led UPA government, especially Prime Minsiter Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi on behalf of the people of the state for fulfilling the long felt dream of the people,'' Mr Karunanidhi said.

He said the DMK government had played a key role in establishing the steel plant and when the previous BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government tried to privatise the plant, the DMK had vehemently opposed it, Mr Karunanidhi said in a statement here.
