'CWC rebukes UPA failures, calls it deception'
New Delhi, June 30: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today dubbed the Congress Working Committee (CWC) pulling up the UPA Government for its failure to check spiralling prices as a copy book example of ''political duplicity, deception and double talk'' and said the government has to explain how they were able to convert India, an economy of surplus to an era of shortages.
BJP Spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad said the CWC to admonish the UPA in the presence of an economist like Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, English speaking Finance Minister and an experienced leader like Pranab Kumar Mukherjee tantamounted to the Congress offering an apologetic explanation for the Government's inaction to curb inflation.
He said the government also owed an explanation to the people as to how the overflowing Indian godowns were reduced forcing the country to import wheat from abroad. The Government on several occasions has admitted in Parliament that the food storages in the country was adequate and there were no shortages. ''It should not be a case where the food is imported paying valuable foreign exchange and food stored in the godowns is devoured by rats", Mr Prasad said.
He said during the NDA regime, the country not only produced plenty but also exported food grains outside India and there were no long queues be it for food grains, cooking gas or telephone connections. Under the UPA regime things have changed dramatically in diametrically opposite direction, he alleged.
The BJP spokesman said the Congress under Mrs Indira Gandhi spoke of 'Garibi Hatao' and poor people were suffering and now it will be the turn of the common man because the Congress slogan is centered around the 'Aam Admi'.
He said the Prime Minister, who was touring Vidarbha areas of Maharashtra should take action against the family of the Congress MLA who had a history of fleecing the farmers by lending at enormous interest rates. ''His visit to the area is greeted by suicides of five farmers,'' he said.
He said the CWC drama of admonishing the UPA Government was nothing but a ploy to con the people of the country and the reality was that the UPA government had failed badly and was unable to manage the economy. The government could not take credit for the growth in the economy because it was enterpreneur driven, he said.
