Congress candidate files her nomination

New Delhi, Jun 30 (UNI) Ms Seema Luthra today filed her nomination as Congress candidate from West Delhi's Subhash Nagar ward of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, elections to which will be held on July 23.

Ms Luthra, who was accompanied by many party leaders, filed her nomination papers this morning.

Ms Meena Kanwaria had already filed her nomination as BJP candidate.

Elections were being held to the ward after the Supreme Court cancelled the elections in December last year. It quashed the candidature of Congress nominee Sunita Bharti and said upper caste woman could not avail quota benefit (on account of her husband's caste) after marriage.

The judgement came on an appeal by defeated candidate BJP's Meera Kanwaria.

Ms Kanwaria challenged her election on the ground that Ms Sunita was not entitled to reservation benefit because she was not born in a SC family and could not claim the benefit merely on the strength of her marriage to a man from the community.
