Cromwell, Connecticut, June 30 (UNI) Arjun Atwal failed to hit a single birdie as he carded a disappointing two-over 72 to be tied for the 101st spot after the opening round of the 4,400,000 dollar Buick Championship at the TPC River Highlands here.

The Orlando-based Indian once again found himself struggling for form as he stumbled twice in his otherwise ordinary performance.

Atwal, who failed to make the cut in last week's Booz Allen Classic, will again find it hard to stay in contention and would have to raise his game by several notches to prevent another drop.

Atwal's front-nine was level-par but on his way back, Atwal lost the plot and dropped two shots on the 10th and 13th to end the day with an over-par score.

Australian Peter Lonard (65) fired four successive birdies to be tied for the lead with Americans Heath Slocum, Harrison Frazor and Scott Verplank on a crowded leaderboard.

The quartet held a single-shot lead over six players below them.
