GSWSS scheme to be completed by December, 2006

Shillong, Jun 29 (UNI) Public Health Engineering (PHE) Minister Prestone Tynsong told the state Assembly today that the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS) is expected to be completed by December 6.

The Minister was replying to a question by Sengman R Marak, who wanted to know the progress of the scheme and escalation of cost from that of original estimate of Rs 2390 lakh.

The Minister had stated that the cost jacked up almost four times from Rs 2390 lakh to 9503,77 lakh.

He informed that it was increased due to phase II scheme of GSWSS later.

The scheme, which began in 1992, would be completed by December.

To another question by Manas Choudhuri (IND), the Minister said the designed requirement of water was 135 lt per capita per day.

The Minister had informed the House that at present 9 million gallon of water was required to meet the demand, but it could manage only 6.4 million gallon.

Efforts were on to meet the shortage of water supply to the whole of greater Shillong.
