Excise department destroys drugs worth Rs one cr

Aizawl, June 29 (UNI) Mizoram Excise officials today destroyed drugs worth about Rs one crore across the state.

Observing International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, state Excise Minister Dr Lalzama praised various NGOs in the state for their campaign against drugs.

According to the Excise department, Mizoram was ''introduced'' to drugs about 20 years back resulting in drugs problems in nearly every household in the state.

The drugs destroyed this morning was 2.905 kg of heroin, 52,785 capsules of Spasmo Proxyvon, 670 Amphetamine, 44.5 kg of Ephedrine, 9003 tablets of Nitrazepum, 3,300 tablets of Diazepum, 10.085 kg of ganja, 19 tablets of Deiciline and 10 tablets of Alex50.

Apart from this, district authorities in Kolasib and Chmaphai had destroyed some quantities of drugs in their respective districts earlier in the year.

Kolasib, being the main route for Proxyvon, destroyed 8,52,469 painkillers.

Excise department records show death toll from drugs till 2005 was 936. Of these, 884 deaths were due to the painkiller Proxyvon while the rest died from other drugs. About 94 drug victims are females.
