Srinagar, June 29 (UNI) Militants shot dead an ex-militant-turned- contractor and attacked a security forces' patrol while two ultras surrendered in Jammu and Kashmir since last evening, an official spokesman said today.

Unidentified gunmen shot at and critically wounded Syed Abdul Rehman Mir, a former militant and now a contractor, at Gund Dachna village in Bandipora area of north Kashmir's Baramulla district today, he said.

Mir was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to wounds, he added.

The spokesman said two local militants surrendered before the security forces at Trehgam in the frontier district of Kupwara last evening.

Official sources said militants lobbed a hand grenade towards a security forces' patrol near the Sopore police station in north Kashmir this afternoon.

However, the grenade did not explode and a bomb disposal squad was pressed into service to defuse it, they added.

The sources said the grenade was later defused without causing any damage.
