'Dead man' caught after more than 3 years

New Delhi, June 29 (UNI) Police have arrested a 44-year-old man, who faked his own death in 2002 to escape the police, seeking his arrest in several criminal cases, from R K Puram area of South Delhi.

Hailing from Baghpat (Uttar Pradesh) Abdul Salam alias Islam was arrested from Mohan Singh Market in R K Puram while he moving in a suspicious manner, according to the police.

A country-made pistol and two cartridges were recovered from the hardened criminal.

During interrogation he said he had come to rob a businessman but on sustained questioning the accused revealed that he was booked under the Arms Act in January 2000 by Loni Police and detained at Dasna jail.

In December 2002, Abdul killed one Zakir, whom he befriended during his jail term, and set him on fire and faked his own death by leaving his footwear and personal diary at the spot.

Investigations revealed that he had eight cases against him.
