CWC asks Govt to put in place a mechanism to check price rise

New Delhi, June 29 (UNI) The Congress today expressed its deep concern for the plight of the ''aam aadmi'' under the impact of spiralling prices, and asked the Union Government to work out an effective mechanism to check the rising prices and the current inflationary trend.

An emergency meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), chaired by Party President Sonia Gandhi, was attended by all the 20 CWC members, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and the 13 permanent invitees.

Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee told mediapersons that the meeting discussed exclusively the price situation and the current inflationary trend.

He said Finance Minister P Chidambaram explained the government's viewpoint on the spiralling prices of essential commodities.

Asked if the meeting criticised the government for the current situation, he said the meeting, in fact, took note and appreciated the various measures already taken by the government to reduce the impact of high prices of certain essential commodities.

It urged the Centre to work out an "effective mechanism to manage the demand and supply of essential commodities and to check the rise of prices in order to reduce its impact on the vulnerable sections of the society.
