City's indefinite taxi strike called off within a day
Kolkata, Jun 29 (UNI) The Bengal Taximen Association-sponsored indefinite taxi strike in the city to protest the soaring cost of diesel and government cess was called off tonight following assurance from state Transport Minister Subhas Chakraborty.
As a result of the strike, more than 35,000 taxies went off the roads today, crippling life in the city.
Realising the gravity of the situation, he convened an emergency meeting with senior office-bearers of the Association at his Writers' Buildings chamber, where he assured them of taking the issue with the Union Government for an early solution.
On the basis of the Minister's assurance, the strike was withdrawn from midnight tonight providing relief to all.
