BCC's Trade Reforms&Indirect Taxes Standing Comittee Chairman S N Kasera in an interactive session on Service Tax, said the Centre has taken new initiative to rope in some post offices in New Delhi for Service Tax payers to register themselves for paying tax and filing returns from July 1.

The Revenue Department has tied with Department of Posts in which the Service tax payers in New Delhi can pay tax and file returns in 22 designated post offices against payment of Rs 100.

Mr Kasera while welcoming the move suggested that such facility should be extended to other towns of the country also in a phase manner. Moreover, the Department should also come publicize in the media about this facility as and when introduced so that assesses can avail of this opportunity.

He said the government has reportedly decided to set up a one-man committee under the chairmanship of former joint secrtery T R Rustogi to review circulars on Service taxes. The government has also invited comments from the public, trade, industry and associations on the review. " It cannot be denied that the plethora of circulars issued regarding Service Tax are mostly overlapping and create tremendous confusion in the minds of the asssesses", he added.
