Water harvesting on major PWD roads In Delhi

New Delhi, Jun 28 (UNI) Delhi Urban Development and PWD Minister A K Walia today instructed the Public Works Department to go for large scale water harvesting on its all major roads that did not have sewer lines and water accumulated there on rainy days.

In order to fight the twin problems of water logging and depleting water table, Dr Walia asked PWD Engineer-in-Chief to prepare an action plan of water harvesting within a fortnight to take immediate appropriate action to overcome the problem of fast lowering of underground water level in Delhi, which was a great cause of concern.

He also instructed all PWD Chief Engineers to streamline the existing water harvesting infrastructure in 350 government building, schools and flyovers to get them in good working order.

Important PWD roads like Ring road, Outer Ring Road and Mathura Road could be taken up for water harvesting in first phase.

Apart from this, Dr Walia reiterated his commitment to intensify efforts of greening major roads. Private company which, had been instructed responsibility of maintenance of 80 KM of ring road and outer ring road had been told to work for survival of planted saplings.

Meanwhile, Dr Walia took very serious view of incidents of water logging on roads. He decided to personally inspect PWD drains and take round of all vulnerable points at Vikas Marg, Bhairon Mandir, Tilak Bridge, Hanuman Mandir, ISBT, Model Town and Azadpur to oversee remedial measures taken by various concerned departments.

In an effort not to leave any loose end, the minister had decided to personally take care of 'difficult areas' to avoid recurrence of yesterday like situation, which brought lot of embarrassment to Delhi government.

He further directed engineers concerned to complete drainage repair and ensure removal of rubble from the roads within two days.
