Ruthless Hewitt scurries into round two
LONDON, June 28 (Reuters) Lleyton Hewitt underlined his Wimbledon credentials with an emphatic 6-1 6-1 6-3 first round win over Italian Filippo Volandri today.
The Australian, champion here in 2002 before Roger Federer took control of the grasscourt championships, was barely tested by an opponent who had won only one match here in three previous visits.
Hewitt, seeded sixth, set the tone of the match when he stormed through the first set in just 18 minutes.
A netted forehand ended Volandri's challenge and the former world number one will now meet either Brazilian Flavio Saretta or Lee Hyung-taik.
