Police station gheraoed after custodial death of youth

Ferozpur, June 28 (UNI) Agitated residents of Basti Sheikh today 'gheraoed' the city police station following the ''mysterious'' death of a 20-year old youth in police custody.

The deceased Madan Mohan of Basti Sheikh locality was picked up by the police in a theft case, in which he was a suspect. Within half an hour of his detention at the city police station this morning, he was reported dead by the police.

SP(headquarters) Harjinder Singh claimed before mediapersons here that the youth used his shirt to hang himself from a water pipe inside the police station. When a section of the media visited the police station, they found that the water pipe was just about four feet high.

On receiving news of death of the youth, the residents of Basti Sheikh converged at the police station shouting slogans and demanding action against the policemen responsible for the death.

Veroo, mother of Madan Mohan alleged that her son died due to torture at the hands of the policemen.

The police has sent the body for postmortem at the civil hospital.
