Paradorn slips up in first round again

LONDON, June 27 (Reuters) Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan suffered his fifth first round defeat at Wimbledon in seven years when he lost in five sets to Argentine Agustin Calleri today.

The men's 29th seed went down 6-7 7-5 6-3 3-6 6-3 to world number 58 Calleri on court 18.

Paradorn upset Andre Agassi at the grasscourt grand slam in 2002 but otherwise has seldom performed well on a surface that appears well suited to his playing style.

He led 5-4 in the first set on Monday before rain stopped play but Calleri repelled the Thai's heavy serve effectively on Tuesday and finished the stronger of the two.

Calleri, who has never been beyond round two at Wimbledon, will play talented Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka next.

Wawrinka, ranked 67, won his first match at Wimbledon when he toppled tall Croatian Ivo Karlovic in another five-setter, taking the decider 11-9.
