Man held over Croydon model murder

LONDON, June 28 (Reuters) British police today said detectives had arrested a 35-year-old man over the murder of part-time model Sally Anne Bowman, stabbed to death outside her home in south London last year.

The suspect was held in Surrey yesterday night and has been taken to a south London police station for questioning The 18 year-old, who worked as a hairdresser, was sexually assaulted and repeatedly stabbed just yards from her front door in Croydon in the early hours of September 25 after she returned from a night out with friends in the town centre.

Earlier this year police said they had obtained DNA evidence from the scene of the murder and had encouraged local men to come forward to eliminate themselves from the inquiry.

Detectives said they had about 4,000 suspects who either lived in, or had connections with, the south Croydon area.

A new e-fit was recently released based on a suspect linked by DNA to an indecent assault in 2001.
