K'taka Govt sanctions 130 new PUCs

Bangalore, June 28 (UNI) The Karnataka Government has sanctioned 130 new Pre-University Colleges in the State, besides permitting another 230 unaided institutions to start from this acadamic year, Primary Education Minister Basavaraj Horatti informed the Legislative Council today.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, JD(S) member Srikante Gowda said thousands of students who have passed 10th standard were in distress as they could not get admissions to PUC due to shortage of institutions. He demanded that the State Government start more number of colleges to enable the students to continue their education.

Higher Education Minister and House leader D H Shankaramurthy said that taking into consideration the problems of students, the State Government had taken the initiative to start new colleges.

Intervening, Leader of the Opposition H K Patil said that in Sirsi taluk in Uttara Kannada district, over 2,500 students were on the verge of discontinuing their studies as they were unable to get admissions to PUC for want of colleges.

BJP member Shashil Namoshi appealed to the Government to start more number of Science PUCs as there was more demand for it.
