ILO Vice-President stresses need for 'job-rich growth' policy

Bangalore, June 28 (UNI) International Labour Organisation (ILO) Vice President N M Adayanthaya today stressed the need to put in place a policy to replace ''jobless growth'' with ''job-rich growth'' in the globalised era.

Talking to reporters here, he said job creation challenge, coupled with large scale shift of agriculture and rural areas towards cities pushed by poverty and in search of greener pastures, continued to pose a problem.

''Despite many benefits of globalisation, we see again and again how dignity of work has been devalued. A large portion of the world's population cannot enjoy the potential benfits of globalisation. Moreover, the huge informal sector excludes workers from basic social security safety nets and leased them in total insecurity,'' Mr Adayanthaya, the first Indian to be elected Vice-President of ILO Governing body, said.

Among the other challenges facing the global economy was the need to come to terms with ageing population, discrimination, migration and the fact that six out of ten workers in the world lacked social protection, he said.
