Harassment of women: 31,170 cases registered in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 28 (UNI) Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan today told the State Assembly that between 2001 and 2006 31,170 cases were registered in connection with harassment of women.

In a written reply to Mr C K Sadasivan (CPI-M), he said investigation in 26,093 cases had been completed, charge sheets submitted before court and 630 accused awarded punishment.

Mr Balakrishnan said during the same period, 64 sex racket cases were registered, in which investigation of 44 were completed and charge sheets presented before the court.

The Home Minister said according to the data available there was no increase in suicides in the state.

A total of 9,244 people in 2005 and 3,773 people till May 2006 committed suicide in the state, he said.

Between 2001 and 2006 there were 12,152 missing cases in the state, he said.

During the previous United Democratic Front Government, 7,70,821 crminal cases had been registered.
