Death toll reaches 78 in rain related mishaps in M'wada region

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, Jun 28 (UNI) The death toll in Marathwada due to lightning as well as rain related mishaps reached 78, since June 17, with three more deaths reported from the division here today.

According to official sources at the divisional commissionerate here, about 73 people were killed due to lightning in the region while three were washed away in the floods at Aurangabad, Nanded and Beed districts respectively.

Of the remaining two deaths, a seven-month-old infant Vaishali Jadhav was killed in a fire that broke out suddenly in Lohara tehsil of Osmanabad district, while the other person died when a wall of a well collapsed and fell on him during heavy rains in Aurangabad district, sources said.

Beed disitrct recorded 19 deaths, highest in the region in rain related mishaps. This was followed by Latur with 16 deaths, Aurangabad 13, Osmanabad 8, Jalna 7, while Parbhani, Hingoli and Nanded reported five deaths each.

The division has recorded an average rainfall of 101.8 mm, since the monsoon began this year, which is 75 per cent as compared to the average rainfall till June 26, 2006 and is considered satisfactory, sources said.

Aurangabad district received highest rainfall with 151.3 mm till today followed by Jalna with 123 mm, Osmanabad 122.2 mm, Latur 106.5 mm, Beed 81.3 mm, Hingoli 80.4 mm, Parbhani 77.7 mm, and Nanded 71.7 mm.
