Computer as complusory subject in Meghalaya

Shillong,Jun 28 (UNI) The Meghalaya government may consider computer training as a compulsory subject in schools, state minister in-charge Information and Technology Robert Garnett Lyngdoh informed the Assembly today.

At present, Mr Lyngdoh told members of the House,computer science is also one of the subjects at the SSLC and HSSLC examinations.

Mr Lyngdoh said the government had taken steps to facilitate computer literacy with M/S CISCO, the premier networking training programmes in selected colleges of the state.

The process in this regard is already under way,the minister said adding that the courses on IT Enabled Services were conducted in collaboration with DOEACC, a government of India society.

Mr Lyngdoh added that colleges in the state were also being supported financially for obtaining dedicated internet connectivity.

Besides, he said, the state education department facilitates computer literacy among students through schemes like Computer Literacy and Studies in Schools (CLASS), financial assistance for purchase of computers by schools through finance commission awards, innovative schemes under Sarva Siksha Abhiyan and North Eastern Council schemes.

Replying to a query raised by BJP MLA Alexander Hek, the state IT minister said the process is on to set up the Soft Technology Park at old Meghalaya Watches, adding that the project would be executed by Soft Technology Park of India by October.
