Sensex down 10k mark after firm opening

Mumbai, June 27: The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensex today opened in the green by 16 points at 10,058 as compared to the previous close of 10,042.

However, the upswing was short-lived and the tracking of strong Asian markets proved futile as the Sensex crashed below the 10k mark.

In sectoral gains, auto, metals and IT scrips fared well and the pharma, oil and banking scrips declined overall.

The Asian markets gained on the back of consolidation in the metal sector. Key benchmark indices in Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan were up between 0.09-0.57 per cent.

The major gainers on the index were Reliance Industries which was up by 1.36 per cent, as the annual meeting of shareholders is underway. The much-awaited foray into the retail sector is expected to be announced today.

Tata Motors was up by 0.35 per cent, L&T up by 0.84 per cent, ITC up by 1.27 per cent, Dr Reddy's Lab up by 0.76 per cent and Bharti Airtel up by 0.41 per cent.

The top losers were led by Reliance Communications which was down by 4.52 per cent and followed by HDFC by 3.10 per cent, Cipla down by 2.25 per cent, Hindlaco down by 2.83 per cent and Reliance Energy and ONGC are down by 3.32 and 2.70 per cent respectively.
