New Delhi, June 27 (UNI) The morning rains and subsequent traffic jams played spoilsport for scores of students seeking admission to the Delhi University on the first day of completing formalities today.

Very few students could make it to the university as heavy rains lashed the capital till 1000 hrs followed by a series of gridlock all across the city.

After the announcement of the first cut off list, the University earmarks the next three working days for completion of admission formalities and securing the seats. Several colleges generally work from 0930 hrs to 1230 hrs.

Despite being the first day of filing papers, several colleges wore a deserted look in the first couple of hours. However, later the numbers picked up a bit with some students managing to reach the institutes.

''Even though I started from my Laxmi Nagar home at 0930 hrs I only managed to reach the campus at 1145 hrs. I wanted to start early for north campus but could not because of the rains. I just managed to meet the deadline,'' said Shruti Sharma who filed her papers in Hansraj College.

But most of the other students were not as fortunate.

''I was caught in a traffic jam at Dhaula Kuan for more than three hours and missed the deadline and will have to come again tomorrow. From Janakpuri it generally takes an hour to reach north campus.... the entire first day has been wasted,'' said Piyush Mittal, who could not files his papers at Ramjas College as the office had closed.

Same was the case with Neha Ranjan, who travelled from Rohini in the metro but still could not meet the deadline.

''I was hopeful that I would complete all formalities today but first I could not leave my house on time and when we reached the campus it was waterlogged...I will have to come back tomorrow,'' she said.

A university officials said the number of students coming to file their papers were very less today.

''Generally on the first day all colleges are crowded with students and their parents...but today because of the rains, waterlogging and traffic jams the numbers were less,'' he said.

He said the students had two more days and that was enough to for all formalities to be completed.
